Press Release:

Universal Laser Systems, Inc. announces the availability of High Power Density Focusing Optics™ (HPDFO) for its Professional Series and VersaLaser systems.

The breakthrough technology of High Power Density Focusing Optics offers customers the option to use their CO2 lasers for metal marking, a benefit that is uncommon for compact laser systems. The patent-pending technology of HPDFO dramatically reduces the focused spot size and produces finer, more detailed engraving. Unlike traditional beam expanders which increase the entire cross-section of the laser beam, Universal's HPDFO produces a higher concentration of power without the larger beam path requirements or additional space and larger optics. Thus, HPDFO technology can be utilized in a variety of systems, including compact laser systems like VersaLaser.

For the end user, the addition of HPDFO makes it possible to create small, high-resolution marks, engrave smaller text, produce higher-resolution graphics and photographs, and vector mark and cut thinner lines. Especially appealing to customers will be the ability to scribe and/or etch directly on some uncoated metals, such as stainless steel, without using marking compounds.

The ability to mark directly on bare metals is in high demand for product decoration and for identification marking in medical device, aerospace, automotive, and electronics manufacturing. In the past, direct metal marking could only be accomplished by using high- power CO2 lasers, low-power CO2 lasers in combination with metal marking compounds and solutions, or solid state lasers like Nd:YAG lasers. According to Chris Risser, Product Development Manager at Universal Laser Systems, Inc., "CO2 laser processing with HPDFO is a much less expensive alternative to solid state laser processing for marking stainless steel."
