ULTRA 9MWH Specifications


Platform Overview

The ULTRA 9MWH platform equipped with MultiWave HybridTM technology can process the broadest range of compatible materials. This unique technology uses a combined beam of laser power containing up to three wavelengths – 9.3 µm, 10.6 µm and 1.06 µm – in a single coaxial beam. Each spectral component of the beam is independently controlled and can be modulated in real time.

The ULTRA 9MWH is part of the ULTRA product line, which offers tailored solutions for laser material processing for the widest possible range of materials. The ULTRA series is designed and ideally suited for precision material processing in manufacturing, research and development, academic research, and prototyping environments. With its unique modular architecture, the ULTRA series, provides customizable solutions that can be easily reconfigured. A wide array of options is available for enhancing performance, capability, and safety to complete the perfect solution to meet present and future business needs.

Major features include rapid, high-accuracy laser beam positioning, precision focusing with autofocus, adjustable laser power density, an automation interface, camera registration, an integrated touch screen user interface, and support for fire detection and suppression.

The platform has a materials processing envelope of 36 x 24 in (914 x 610), with a motorized long travel Z-axis for materials with a thickness up to 12 in (305 mm). It supports two interchangeable CO2 lasers that can be of the same wavelength or different wavelengths for a maximum power of 150 watts. 10.6 µm CO2 lasers are available in the power range of 10 to 75 watts. 9.3 µm CO2 lasers are available in 30, 50 or 75 watts. Fiber lasers are available in 40 or 50 watts.

Coaxial Gas Assist Attachment

The Coaxial Gas Assist attachment directs flow perpendicular to the material’s surface. There are different Coaxial Gas Assist Attachments for each focusing lens; these maintain the optimal distance from the material while avoiding beam path obstruction. The Coaxial Gas Assist attachment forces air against the material and helps remove laser material processing byproducts from cutting, engraving, and marking processes.

Computer Controlled Coaxial Gas Assist with Material Collision Detection

Gas assist can be programmed to switch between compressed air and other non-flammable support gases such as nitrogen. Users can program use of gas type and and flow level on a process-by-process basis within a design file.

Material collision detection is built into the coaxial gas fitting on the carriage with provisions for the fitting to breakaway in case of lateral collision and auto-sense vertical collision. Safety is improved because collisions are detected and processing is stopped. This feature reduces the likelihood of damage to the material being processed and to the laser system due to collisions between material, fixturing, and carriage.

Gas assist improves results for a variety of laser processing applications by directing byproducts (smoke and fumes) of laser processing away from the material, cooling materials, and changing the gas components ratio at the point of laser energy interaction with the material to increase or reduce oxidation reactions during laser processing.

Direct File Import

In addition to standard print drivers, ULS offers a Direct File Import option that enables users to import certain types of files directly into the laser system control software, without the need to print from any third party software.

Laser System Manager

The Laser System Manager (LSM) is a user interface that controls ULS laser systems. This intuitive interface enables users to produce expert quality results. The LSM includes a Printer Driver and Direct Import Feature for uploading graphic designs. The LSM also provides an Intelligent Materials Database that calculates optimized settings for laser processing on hundreds of materials.

The Lateral Gas Assist attachment is an adjustable attachment that can direct air along the material’s surface at a variety of incident angles. This is particularly helpful in raster engraving applications where debris can be removed from the engraving for ideal processing.

Compressed Air Source

ULS offers a compressed air solution that delivers optimally-conditioned air to both the Optics Protection and Gas Assist components. Additionally, the compressor controls the laser cutting, engraving, and marking equipment by supplying air only when it is demanded, reducing unnecessary wear, electrical costs and noise.

Fire Suppression

Certain materials being laser processed have the potential to ignite and continue to burn, which can cause damage. As a backup to required supervision, ULS has developed a fire suppression option that can help mitigate the potential for damage. The fire suppression module deploys fire suppressant into the laser material processing area if self-sustained combustion is detected.

Class 4 Conversion Module (Enabling Pass-Through)

The patented Class 4 Conversion Module is an option that allows the user to quickly and easily convert a laser system between a fully enclosed Class 1 operation and an open Class 4 operation. This allows the user to place oversized objects in the laser system or pass continuous objects such as rolls of material or conveyor systems through the laser system.

Configurable Cutting Table (Pin Table)

The Configurable Cutting Table consists of an anodized aluminum plate with an array of precision holes with regular spacing. Specially designed material-support pins are placed into these holes in an arrangement to fully support the target-material while avoiding the cutting path of the laser completely. The result is zero back-reflection onto the lower surface of the target-material while maintaining full material support.

Flow-Through Cutting Table

The Flow-through Cutting Table consists of a thin-wall aluminum honeycomb-core evenly supported by an underlying hollow structure. The target material is placed on the honeycomb core. When excess laser power passes the lower surface of the target material during a laser cutting process, this excess power is passed into the supporting structure where it is absorbed in an unfocused state.

1-Touch Laser Photo™ is an innovative product for converting digital photographs into bitmap files that can be used to engrave the image into materials. This transforms an ordinary photograph into a professional quality engraving. Air-Cooled Laser Source

Because our laser sources are air-cooled, no complicated liquid cooling systems are required.

Laser Fan Control (to reduce noise)
