3M^™ Extreme Sealing Tapes consist of a pressure sensitive acrylic foam adhesive tape with an ionomer liner. Laser cutting Extreme Sealing Tape is done with either a 9.3 or 10.6 micron wavelength CO₂ laser. The laser beam rapidly heats and vaporizes the material directly in its path creating smooth cut with no residue. Extreme Sealing Tapes are difficult to cut with mechanical tools with traditional cutting edges because the acrylic foam adhesive sticks to the cutting edges. Laser cutting Extreme Sealing Tapes overcomes this problem because laser cutting is a non-contact process.
