Kapton® Tapes

Kapton® Overview

Kapton® tapes are made from polyimide film coated with a silicone based adhesive. Laser processing of Kapton® tapes can be performed with both the 9.3 and 10.6 micron CO2 lasers as well as the 1.06 micron fiber laser. Laser cutting of Kapton® tape with a 9.3 and 10.6 micron CO2 laser produces a clean sharp edge and surface residue that can be cleaned with a solvent. Processing Kapton® with a 9.3 micron CO2 results in a significant reduction in carbonization as compared to the 10.6 micron CO2 laser. Laser marking of Kapton® can be performed with a 1.06 micron fiber laser and creates a sharp black mark. Laser engraving is generally not applicable as engraving can damage the liner and the adhesive.
