Mother of pearl, or nacre, is an organic-inorganic composite material harvested from the inner surface of shells produced by certain mollusks. Mother of pearl is commonly used for decorative purposes due to its lustrous and often colorful appearance. Laser processing of mother of pearl is performed with either a 10.6 or 9.3 micron CO₂ laser. Laser cutting of mother of pearl results in a smooth, clean edge free of discoloration. Laser engraving and marking of mother of pearl is typically not performed as little depth or contrast is created. The 1.06 micron fiber laser is not recommended for use with this material as it is not readily absorbed.
