Velcro

Velcro Overview

Velcro is a trademarked name for hook and loop fasteners made by Velcro Companies. The hooks of Velcro and other hook and loop fasteners are usually made from nylon or polyester, while the woven base tape and loops are made from materials like polyester, polypropylene, and general aramid fabrics. Laser processing of Velcro is possible with the 10.6 and 9.3 micron CO2 lasers, as well as with the 1.06 micron fiber laser. Laser cutting of Velcro can be performed with the 9.3 or 10.6 micron CO2 laser and produces a smooth cut with slightly melted edges with no appreciable difference between the wavelengths. Laser engraving of Velcro may be done with either the 9.3 or 10.6 micron CO2 laser and produces a shallow engraving by melting the material. Laser engraving with the 1.06 micron laser is not recommended as it does not produce any noticeable depth. Laser marking of Velcro may be possible with the 1.06 micron fiber laser depending on the composition of the base material. If certain additives are present in the material, the 1.06 micron fiber laser may turn a black base tape white or a white base tape black. Laser marking of Velcro with the 9.3 or 10.6 micron CO2 lasers is not recommended because it does not produce a contrasting mark.
